In notes going back several months I have recorded a 76861 and a 76864 generator. One was on Amazon and one was at a local store. I never was able to determine the difference. When my last call to Generac customer service said that my wait time would be in excess of two hours ... forget it. I'll just take my chances that the differences are subtle. The generator that I actually got was a 76764 and it has the CO sensor. Something I wasn't wild about.

From the git-go I was considering a Harbor Frt and a Generac. The Harbor Frt was more bang for the buck but given my location I thought service, should it be needed, would be a problem. Generac advertised Made in America. That was really important to me. I guess their ads referred to the whole house generators as mine was made in Viet Nam. Wasn't happy about that.

I had been watching this generator on Amazon for literally months. It was mostly in the $1100 to $1200 range. When it momentarily dropped to $850 I jumped on it.
I was surprised to find that it came in a box instead of a pallet as I was expecting. And it all arrived in far better shape than I had a reasonable right to expect. Only a couple minor scars on the outside of the box.

The generator came essentially assembled. Just put on the wheels and handle and you're pretty much good to go. They were thoughtful (?) enough to put the assembly instructions on the outside of the box. The drawing showed 4 identical bolts. But they're not. I defy anyone to get them exactly right the first time not knowing this. The drawing also shows 5 washers. I never did figure out where that fifth washer belonged. The wheels are not pneumatic and I can see a problem moving it farther than out of the garage. Especially over rough terrain.

All said, I'm very happy with the purchase. Just hope I never have to call the factory for anything.
The CO sensor does work but it's not as sensitive as I feared it might be. It's plenty noisy though.

My 8000 Watt (10,000 watt start-up) is running now SMUD disconnected power today so the crew from Lumio could install my solar panels, Transfer Switch, AND Generac 18Kw whole house generator.
My son will get the 8000 this weekend.
Those folks complaining about “the box arrived smashed” Ha! That’s not a Generac problem. It’s a truck delivery problem. Idiots.
This is a strong, good running generator.
It makes noise, but it’s tolerable. Better than no lights, TV, and no heat!
I HIGHLY recommend it.

Handle weld came loose. Everything else is fine. Need a new handle. Thanks.
Everything is good. Other than the handle welds are broken. Could use bigger carter pin also. Mine came out and I just replaced with small hitch pins.

Perfect generator for keeping the lights on when PG&E turns off your power

When PG&E said they would shut our power off for a PSPS, we went out and bought this generator at a local hardware store for $100 more than Amazon sell it for. A friend of ours is an electrician and he hooked the 30 amp cord (not included) to our sub power panel. When the power went out, we disconnected our breaker to the power company and ran the house off the generator.

We specifically turned off high load equipment, such as the dryer, oven, and microwave.

This 6500 watt generator was more than sufficient to keep our 2400sqft house powered. We have 4 fridges/freezers, LED lights and 2 TV's.

On first use, the generator ran fine without hiccup for 8 hours. The next day we ran it for 10 hours and again the following day before the power utility turned the grid back on. We called our electrician friend back, turned off the generator, turned all breakers off and then he unwired the generator and put everything back.

This generator was perfect for our needs. It kept everything on as if grid power was available. In each of those long run times, it sipped gas. It only used about 7-8 gallons fuel in about 22 hours run time.

One item of note is the generator is loud. Let your neighbors know you'll be running it during the day time hours. Be mindful of local noise ordinances.

Moving forward, we're getting a breaker interlock installed on our sub panel to meet local permit requirements so we may run our generator in the future when PG&E turns the power off.
